Positive and negative effects of social media
Positive Effects of social media:
Social media on the whole is a positive experience for most people, it does many things like enable us to contact people who we would otherwise not and keep up to date with people who no longer near live you or have moved away. It is the way most people get news and updates on things going on in and around their local community, whilst updating people on disasters and events around the world. It has made us more able to respond to events happening around the world and in out own lives and get together with people who you want to get with.
Negative effects of social media:
Despite all the positives of social media there are also a lot of negatives, the main of which is people wasting time on social media. It starts off with clicking on one link and ending up three hours later realising the time. I think a lot of people including myself waste time on social media when they could be doing other things they love such as drawing, reading, education or exercise. Because social media can take so much time from someone they are unable to do others things they want to. It also is a breeding ground for people to make groups supporting hate and teenagers bullying each other.
Primary evidence[Interviews]:
The first person I talked to had positive outlook on social media. He used social media the least of my respondents with only an hour usage daily. This would have likely made his outlook on social media what it was where he said that 50% of his time on social media was well spent. This means that he thinks that of the time on social media only half of it was well spent catching up with friends and such.
The second person I interviewed talked about how they think that the time they spend on social media is not well spent, but at the same time talking about how is is useful to communicate with others whilst also sharing funny images with others. However the problem stems from using far to many social media websites, they used a total of four which seemed about the average for the people I asked, this consumed alot of his time and is why I think they did think all of their time was well spent on social media.
The third person I talked to talked about using social media to not only talk to friends but to get the news and important events going on the world.
Secondary evidence[Research]:
Sources[BBC.co.uk]The negatives are that if a person has a social media account they are likely to be bullied or they can find out information about people that can ruin relationships. People tend to also spend to much time on social media which can not only damage health but ruin hobbies and interactions with other people.
The Positives of social media are that it gives people a safe space to show off who they are as a person and find others who are interested in the same topics. It is also a place to get informed and learn about the world and what is going on as well as keeping in touch with people who live far away and family. It is the perfect place to get a group together and plan trips such as family reunions.
